Reverb 10 – Day 21

December 21

Prompt: Future self. Imagine yourself five years from now. What advice would you give your current self for the year ahead? (Bonus: Write a note to yourself 10 years ago. What would you tell your younger self?)

Five years from now…seems like an eternity, but I know it’s going to fly by…especially since the last five years of my life flew past. Five years from now, I would tell my current self to just slow down and have some fun. Take some time to enjoy this phase of your life, because it’s never going to happen again. You only get to be 24-25 once, so relish every single moment of it. Realize that every situation that you encounter may not end up the way that you want it to go, but that in the end, it will ultimately serve to make you a better person. Struggle will only make you appreciate your achievements more when you reach them. I’d tell myself for the next year to go into it head first; start to achieve some of your dreams. Time isn’t slowing down just because you think you’re too busy to do some things, or too scared to go some places, or too worrisome to accomplish your dreams. Have a lot of fun, love on your friends a lot, be open to change, and take all the punches as they come. Live by the motto you set for yourself…live, love, laugh. All three—very key to your enjoyment of 2011. Whatever you do, don’t forget that whatever the situation may look like right now, it will get better. You’re worth a whole lot, and you mean a whole lot to a large number of people, so don’t ever forget just how awesome you really are. You really can do anything you want to if you put the preparation and time in…your success lies in your hands and in God’s hand, and no matter what you do, if it’s what He wants for you, it will happen.

If I had to write a note to myself 10 years ago, I would tell myself that things are about to get rough…really rough. The next few years of your life will probably be the hardest ones of you r life for a myriad of reasons, but hang in there. Try not to get overly emotional about everything – it’s a label that will follow you around for a really long time, regardless of how many changes you make. I know this time is scary for you, but you’ll be fine…go hug Dad more, he’ll end up getting really sick, and by 17, he won’t be here anymore, so learn all you can from him. That writing thing you do…stick to it, your stuff actually doesn’t suck as bad as you think it does. A lot of the people in your life now will still be in your life 10 years from now, but in different capacities…some of the ones you hate now, you’ll love later. Keep your head up, kiddo…it’s not as bad as it could be. Love you!
